Currently, our young people
remain subjected to the seductive influences
of media imagery without adequate support to
decipher reality from fantasy or barrier
from opportunity. In the Midwest, our
young people are especially vulnerable
because they are geographically isolated
from the entertainment capitals and rely
solely on music as an insight into popular
culture. There is often little or no
exposure to the appropriate guidance that
helps young people gain a more balanced
perspective. This is especially daunting
because these negative images are often far
removed from accurate portrayals of real
life situations. For example, one is not
likely to own a private jet through drug
sells in waterloo, abusing women does not
make one popular and murder has real life
consequences that cannot fade out into the
next commercial. Unfortunately the
consequences of this behavior is a rude
awakening for many. Especially as 26%
Iowa's prison population is comprised of
African Americans who only account for 2% of
the total state population.
Negative
and
pervasive media images are often replicated
in our young peoples’ personal relationships
and general attitudes towards each other and
the greater community. This scenario
coupled with Black Hawk County’s high-level
indicators of poverty, spell disaster and
result in much of the empathetic behavior
and unrest that we are currently
witnessing. KBOL Radio is
working hard to provide outlets for
expression, social support and innovative
strategies that connect individuals to their
communities.
By
presenting
music from a socially responsible
perspective,
hip hop can be used to invigorate even the
most disenfranchised. To this end, KBOL Radio has
created youth centered community-based
programming designed to expose participants
to a variety of mediums for enrichment and
career exploration.
One Mic Youth Broadcasting Association
This auxiliary group illustrates KBOL
Radio’s commitment to providing life-long
learning opportunities. KBOL Radio believes
that student exposure and involvement in all
facets of radio operations will produce
intelligent consumers and articulate
community advocates. From organizational
development, program design and
implementation this group brings the very
best in broadcasting excellence.
Community Service Learning
High School students can consider Community
Radio Partnership when planning their
community service. KBOL Radio is currently
working to develop a relationship with
Waterloo East High School, hosting two
students per semester.
Street Team Marketing & Promotions Club
KBOL Radio’s Street Team will get youth
involved in station event marketing and
promotional initiatives. This program will
provide youth with hands-on field experience
in event planning, support and marketing.
These volunteers will also receive access to
celebrities and major radio sponsored events
as they assist us in furthering community
outreach and awareness.
Speakers Bureau
KBOL Radio on-air talent and administrators
will make regular appearances at community
organizational events to speak with youth
about the goals, mission and experiences of
working at a community-based radio station.
We will also sponsor celebrity appearances
and speaking engagements for local schools
and youth serving organizations as
permitted.
